Sportingkc.com reports that Sporting Kansas City advanced to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cupsemifinals with a 3-0 victory over the Dayton Dutch Lions (USL PRO) at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park on Tuesday. Forward C.J. Sapong scored twice and Jimmy Nielsen posted his second consecutive U.S. Open Cup shutout to move Sporting KC into the semifinals against the Philadelphia Union on July 11 at PPL Park.

Sapong opened the scoring in the game’s fifth minute in fortuitous circumstance, finding himself in the right place at the right time to redirect Seth Sinovic’s long-range shot mid-route. The deflection shifted Sinovic’s shot to the opposite side of the goal, leaving Dayton goalkeeper Matt Williams out of position and unable to recover in time.

Sapong, the reigning MLS Rookie of the Year, continued to threaten on a night that would see him record a single-game career-high seven shots. In the 12th minute, his header went over the bar on a cross from Michael Harrington. One minute later, his shot from the left side went right at Williams.

The Dutch Lions showed early signs of equalizing when Nixon Dias shot narrowly over the bar, the first of four shots for the visitors.

Defender Matt Besler, who made his return from a three-match absence while recovering from appendicitis, sent in a trademark long throw in the 18th minute. Sapong’s flick found Lawrence Olum at the back post but his header was quickly cleared away by an alert Dayton defender.

Dayton’s Thomas Garner made a strong run forward at the 27-minute mark, racing toward the endline on the right side of the penalty area and playing a ball back for Dias. Goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen made a superb stop on the first-time shot, though Gerrit-Jan Bartels was ruled to be obstructing the Sporting KC captain in an active offside position.

Nielsen was called into action again four minutes later, coming off his line quickly tocollect a loose ball as Harrington held off the threatening Gibson Bardsley.

Zusi made an attempt at the spectacular with five minutes to play in the first half, letting loose on a shot from inside midfield in an attempt to catch Williams off his line. The long-range blast looked promising for a moment but sailedwide.

Sporting KC could have taken a 2-0 lead into halftime, but Jacob Peterson’s shot banged off the near post after a give-and-go with Sapong.

The second half saw more attacking from Sporting Kansas City which paid off with two goals and ample chances. Sporting KC’s first chance of the second half came in the 54th minute when Sapong charged down the left flank and shot right-footed for the near post but was denied by Williams.

Sporting Kansas City notched their second goal of the match in the 56th minute when Peterson received a cross from Sinovic and tapped the ball back to Zusi, who took a curling shot from 20 yards out that sailed around Williams and into the net.

Just three minutes later, Sapong scored his second goal of the match with a precise header off of a corner kick from Soony Saad. The goal, Sapong’s fifth in U.S. Open Cup competition, moves him into a tie atop the team’s all-time chart for goals in U.S. Open Cup play and the club improves to 13-0-0 in all competition when Sapong scores.

The chances continued to come for Sporting Kansas City, notably in the 66th minute with a cross from Peterson on the right that was served across the goal to the foot of Sinovic, who made a sliding shot into the outside netting.

Sporting Kansas City comfortably kept possession for the remainder of the half and looked to bag a fourth goal in the 84th minute with a point-blank shot from second-half substitute Teal Bunbury, but he was denied by a commendable, sliding save from Williams.

Dayton had theirbest chance in the second half in the 88th minute when Bret Jones’ header from the top of the penalty area looped narrowly over the crossbar.

Sporting Kansas City will return to MLS action at 7:00 p.m. CT on Friday against theChicago Fire at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. Tickets for the match, presented by U.S. Bank and nationally televised on the NBC Sports Network, are available at Ticketmaster.com or at the LSP Box Offices.

Ussoccer.com reports: The U.S. Men’s National Team will continue its long rivalry against Mexico when the teams square off Aug. 15 at the famed Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The first friendly between the teams on Mexican soil since 1984 will be broadcast live on ESPN2, ESPN3 and Univision. Fans can also follow the match live online via ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker and through Twitter @ussoccer.

“Mexico has proven to be one of the top teams in the world in the moment, so for us this is a huge opportunity,” said U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. “The U.S. and Mexico have a very special rivalry, and the chance to be challenged in an environment like Estadio Azteca in Mexico City will be another important experience for the development of our players.”

The midweek tilt against Mexico continues an approach of taking on the top teams in the world, with the U.S. already having collected its first ever road win against Italy in February and then facing five-time World Cup champion Brazil at the end of the May. This game falls on an international fixture date designated for friendly matches, which means the players will be released following league play the previous weekend.

Series Notes:

  • The USA has never won a match on Mexican soil, holding a lifetime record of 0-23-1. Their last friendly in Mexico resulted in a 2-1 loss on Oct. 17, 1984, in Mexico City.
  • The teams have played south of the border six times since, the USA’s most recently suffering back-to-back 2-1 defeats in FIFA World Cup qualifying (2005 and 2009).
  • The U.S. has a lifetime record of 15-32-12 against Mexico in a series that dates back to 1934.
  • In the teams’ most significant matchup, the United States posted the historic 2-0 victory against Mexico in the Round of 16 of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, advancing the U.S. to the quarterfinals of the tournament for the first time in 72 years.

The U.S. leads Group A in CONCACAF Semifinal Round qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup with four points after two matches, having defeated Antigua & Barbuda on June 8 in the opening match and then earning a 1-1 draw at Guatemala four days later. The United States next faces a double date with Jamaica, traveling to Kingston on Sept. 7 for the first meeting at “The Office” since 2004 and then returning to Columbus Crew Stadium on Sept. 11 in a game to be broadcast live on ESPN2, ESPN3 and the Univision family of networks beginning at 8 p.m. ET.

Veteran midfielder Clarence Seedorf has announced his departure from AC Milan at a press conference on Thursday.
The 36-year-old’s role in the squad had diminished in 2011/12, and with his contract set to expire, coupled with his interest in a move to Brazil, an exit was on the cards for some time.
Speaking to reporters in Via Turati while accompanied by vice-president Adriano Galliani, Seedorf reflected on his 10 years at the club, saying Milan would remain in his heart forever.
“I leave (Milan) after 10 fantastic years, I came here at a crucial moment in my career and after thinking long and hard, I’d do the same thing again,” Seedorf said.
“I’ll have to evaluate my options now and look for a project that stands out. I am very happy with the way I lived my experience at Milan.
“They were busy years, many seasons have passed by quickly, like all the good things in life. I thank the president (Silvio Berlusconi), Adriano Galliani, the staff and the people of Milanello. I hope to greet all the fans with dignity when the time comes.
“I’ve been here 13 years and had two children born here. There will always be a special bond, especially with the city of Milan.
“It was a very important path to take, I spent half of my life in Milan with many team-mates who have allowed me to always remain competitive.”
Seedorf said nothing had been decided as to where his next destination lies, but is confident AC Milan will enjoy more success in the coming years despite relinquishing their Serie A title to Juventus.
“I think I will play for two more years, but now it is pointless to think about the next steps of my life,” he said.
“There was nothing premeditated, I had not decided anything until a few days ago. The choice of leaving AC Milan came about only recently. The relationship is such that we would still have found a renewal agreement.
“I always think about the future, I like new experiences, the club has always enjoyed a peaceful atmosphere.
“I leave a team, struggling to remain competitive in Italy and Europe, at a difficult time for everyone in the economy.
“I think it’s only a matter of time before the team a few years ago is reborn. Generations pass by, but AC Milan will stay at the top everywhere.
“Milan is in my DNA. I will always be close to them whenever they need my help and support.”
As for Zlatan Ibrahimovic waiting to occupy his number 10 shirt, Seedorf said: “I’m happy to give my jersey to Ibra, he has the talent to honour it.”
Seedorf joined AC Milan in 2002 from city rivals Inter and quickly became an important member of the squad, going on to make 300 Serie A appearances for the side.
