Their season seemingly cut short with back-to-back losses to close it out, the Drury men’s soccer Panthers received a second chance on Monday when they learned they received a bid to the NCAA-II ChampionshipsDrury (12-4-2) is the No. 5 seed in the Midwest Region and will play No. 4 seed Notre Dame (Ohio) in a first-round match this Friday in Kansas City with a 6 p.m. start. The winner will face top seed and Great Lakes Valley Conference champion Rockhurst on Sunday at 1 p.m., also in KC. Saginaw Valley State is the No. 2 seed and Quincy the No. 3 seed in the region.
The Panthers, thought what began as such a promising campaign had come to a close when they dropped a 2-0 decision to Missouri Science and Technology at home in the regular season finale, followed by a 1-0 setback to sixth-seed Missouri-St Louis, also at home, in the opening round of the GLVC Championships.
“We had an idea, even after the UMSL game, that there was an outside chance of us making it, but it was a real longshot,” Drury coach Ryan Swan said. “We were following (scores) all weekend, and the right results happened for us.”So now, a team that was ranked as high as No. 5 nationally in the NSCAA poll last month gets a fresh start against a fresh face – Notre Dame (14-5), which lost 1-0 to Saginaw Valley State in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship match.
The Falcons from South Euclid, Ohio, have outscored their opponents 50-22 on the season. They played one GLVC foe, defeating Indianapolis 2-1 on the road in the season opener. Tom Owens and Erik Beattie have scored 10 goals each to lead Notre Dame.
Drury will be going to the NCAA-II tourney for the second time in the program’s history, after making the field in 2009, when the Panthers advanced to the Sweet 16, also under Swan. And it’s a Panthers squad that will be refreshed and rejuvenated, after having taken the last week off from training.
“I think it really could be a plus,” Swan says. “We were carrying around a few (injuries) the last few games, had some guys struggling and battling through it, and I think the time off will help. I think there’s also that devastation you go through when your season ends. So to be given a second life, so to speak, it’s just lifted up everybody.”
Should Drury win twice in Kansas City this weekend, the Panthers would head to Tahlequah, Okla., and the campus of Northeastern State for the next two rounds. This year’s finals are to be held November 29-December 1 in Evans, Georgia.

In a hard fought game, the nationally ranked Drury Soccer Panthers fell to University of Missouri St Louis in double over time. With the win, UMSL moves to the GLVC semifinals in Kansas City next weekend.

Via Drury Panthers: Thomas Mihalczo’s deflected shot from 15 yards out bounced  into an empty net seven minutes into overtime, lifting sixth-seed Missouri St. Louis to a 1-0 upset of third-seed Drury in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Soccer Championships at Harrison Stadium/Curry Sports Complex.

Nationally 17th-ranked Drury, with its second straight loss, likely ended its season with a 12-4-2 record.
After the teams battled for 90 scoreless minutes of regulation, Mihalczo took advantage of wide open space created when DU junior defender Adam Heiligenstein was pulled down by a Triton on the move deep in Panthers’ territory.
Play continued, and Panthers freshman keeper Blake Andrews then came out of the goal to try to stop the UMSL surge, and got a hand on Mihalczo’s shot … but not enough to keep it from trickling into the open goal and sending the Tritons into a celebration.

Tritons keeper Patrick Ream had three saves in picking up the shutout.

Coming off an attention-getting home loss to Missouri S & T to close the regular season, the Drury men’s soccer Panthers will try to bounce back quickly when they play host to Missouri-St. Louis in a first-round Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships match on Sunday.
Start time is 1 p.m. for the matchup at Harrison Stadium in the Curry Sports Complex between the third-seeded Panthers (12-3-2) and the sixth-seeded Tritons from UMSL (10-6-1).
Drury, ranked 17th in last week’s NSCAA national poll, came from behind to defeat UMSL 2-1 in overtime at Harrison on September 30. The Panthers were down 1-0 at halftime after a goal by the Tritons’ Matt Burris, but used an own-goal by UMSL to tie it in the 74th minute, then Shane Woods‘ score off a penalty kick at 1:05.03 for the victory.
Woods, who returned after a four-game absence (ankle) to see some time against S & T in Wednesday’s 2-0 loss to the Miners, leads the Panthers with eight goals. Matt Hutchison, Scott Stiffler and Brett Steere have six goals each, and Nick Ammann has five goals and a team-leading six assists.
Drury has outscored its opponents 49-13 on the season, but finished the regular season being outscored 5-3 in its last three matches, when the Panthers went 1-2-0.
UMSL, 3-0-1 in its last four matches to close the season, has seven goals from Tyler Collico and four goals by Chris Pearson. The Tritons have outscored their opponents 24-13, including 9-2 in their last five matches.
Drury and UMSL are tied 6-6-2 in the all-time series.
