The Miners Men’s Soccer team will open their home schedule this weekend against the St Joseph Puma’s on Friday at 7:30 on the Miner’s field in Rolla.  They face the  Indianapolis Greyhounds on Sunday at 2:30pm.

Great Valley Conference play opened on a down note for the Miners as they dropped decisions to Wisconsin-Parkside and Lewis on the road. S&T held 1-0 leads in the second half of both contests, only to see their opponents come back to win in the second half.

The  St Joseph Pumas, like the Miners, suffered a pair of losses in the opening weekend of conference play. Greyhounds posted a pair of shutouts last week, including a 2-0 win to open GLVC play, but lost  Sunday to fall to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the GLVC.

You can follow Missouri S&T on their website. The website includes live stats which are updated during the game.

The Missouri S&T Lady Miners open their season this Friday 08/31, at the Drury Invitational. They will play Wayne State at 5pm Friday, at Harrison Stadium. Washburn will be the Lady Miners next opponent at Harrison Stadium at noon on Sunday.

Lady Miner Soccer Coach Joe McCauley offered his insights on this young Lady Miners Team in a recent article on Miner Athletics.com. There are only a handful of returning starters. Almost three quarters of this team’s roster is Freshmen and Sophomores

“It is a young team, but I think we’ve got a strong group of leaders,” he said. “Our chemistry and energy is very good. They’re doing a good job of buying into what we’re trying to do and build from. I think that’s going to help us a lot this year in terms of how we develop the team and grow for the future. These things are going to help put us in position to get back to the conference tournament.”
S&T returns three goalkeepers from last year in sophomores Kaitlyn Deister (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) and Madison Gibler (Kansas City, Mo./Staley) and redshirt freshman Carrie Levy (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge ). Deister appeared in six contests, five of those were starts, going 2-3 with a pair of shutouts and had a goals against average of 1.17. Gibler appeared in two contests and finished with a record of 1-1 in those appearances. Levy and newcomer Karen Nightingale (Ellisville, Mo./Marquette) will also battle for the starting keeper’s job.
The back line will be anchored down by sophomores Kacey Ludwig (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) and Sabrina Hostler (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy). Ludwig appeared in 15 games last season while Hostler, a transfer from Saint Louis University, appeared in 16 games last season for the Billikens making eight starts with a goal and an assist last season.
McCauley feels the midfield will be a strength for the ball club with the veteran presence of seniors Colleen Lewis (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall Academy) and Lauren Todd (Raytown, Mo./Raytown South). Juniors Kimberly Ekholm (Houston, Texas/Cy-Springs ), Kirstin Kurilla (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) and Kelsey Salzman (Blue Springs, Mo./Notre Dame de Sion) have played a significant amount of time there as well over the last two seasons. Ekholm and Kurilla each contributed a goal last season while Salzman appeared in all 16 contests. Sophomore Sammy Minea (Leawood, Kan./Blue Valley North ) will be a contributor in the midfield as well.
Up top, the Lady Miners will have to replace the top two scorers from last year in Leah Williams (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) and Melissa Young (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias). This is an area where McCauley expects the entire team to help carry the load.
”We’re not like certain teams that have key players they go to,” he said. “That’s not who we are. We need to depend on everybody to help carry the load and that’s what’s going to help us win games. We need everybody to do their part to push us forward”.

The Lady Miners open Great Lakes Valley Conference play 09/07/12, against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Their first home game will be on Friday, September 14 against Saint Joseph’s College beginning at 5 p.m.

Missouri S&T’s men’s soccer team, which has played in six of the last seven Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournaments since joining the league in 2005, has been picked to finish in one of the playoff spots again this fall as the Miners were tabbed for a seventh place finish in the 16-team league by its coaches.
The Miners finished 10-6-2 a year ago and were 8-5-2 in the highly competitive GLVC, which had the NCAA Division II national champion two years ago and a team that reached the national quarterfinals last fall.  Missouri S&T does enter the season with its top four scorers back from last year’s squad, but lost All-America goalkeeper Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ), who set the school record for career shutouts with 26.
Kyle Schraier (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers College ), who scored a team-high five goals for S&T in 2011, returns along with two-time all-conference defender Spencer Brinkmeyer (Kansas City, Mo./Oak Park) and forwards Peter Vaccaro (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ) and Peter Haw (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West )Jervis Atagana (Columbia, Mo./Hickman ), S&T’s assist leader with five last season, also returns to the mix for the 2012 campaign that will begin Sept. 1 in Quincy, Ill., against Lindenwood University as noted on minerathletics.com

The Drury Panthers finished 13-8-0 last season after surging into the GLVC Championships finals in Kansas City, where they fell 2-1 in double overtime to Quincy in the title match with a squad consisting mostly of freshmen and sophomores in key roles. Among that team’s most notable victories in 2011 were a 1-0 triumph over Rockhurst in mid-September and a win over nationally fourth-ranked Northern Kentucky 2-1 in Highland Heights, Ky., in the first round of the GLVC tourney followed by a 2-1 win over Bellarmine the following weekend in the meet’s semifinals in KC.
Among the top returnees for DU in 2012 are leading scorer and junior forward Matt Hutchison (six goals, 15 points) and sophomore midfielder Jack Mathis (four goals, team-high six assists) as reported by drurypanthers.com

The 16 GLVC men’s soccer teams will compete in a 15-game round robin schedule during the regular season with the top eight teams earning a berth to the GLVC Championship Tournament. The top four seeds will host quarterfinal matches on campus on Oct. 28 with the four remaining teams heading to the top remaining seed site for the semifinals and final on Nov. 2 and 4. The 2012 regular season will open on Aug. 30 with six GLVC teams in action.  Conference play is slated to start on Sept. 7.
