Catholic v Nixa 2013

Catholic v Nixa 2013

Nixa, MO- Fresh off their weekend win at the Hickman Tournament, the Nixa Lady Eagles took the field against the Springfield Catholic Lady Irish Monday night. Springfield Catholic showed they were ready to take on the favored Nixa team.

The first half was a defensive battle for Catholic, fighting off constant attacks on goal from Nixa. The Lady Eagles, while in control of the game, were unable to score in the first half.  Catholic goalie Mary Wichmer blocked some bullets fired by Nixa, to keep the game scoreless at the half.

Twenty minutes into the second half, Nixa’s Shelby Ewing was able to put the first score on the board with a shot from 16 yards out. The Lady Eagles desire for another goal was evident as they pushed hard, getting two yellow cards along with off side calls. Catholic was able to take advantage of one of the  off side calls when Lydia Holtman drove in a goal with 4 minutes left on the clock, evening the score. Not to be outdone, Jordyn Hoskins of Nixa put a shot over the outstretched fingers of Catholic’s goalie with 43 seconds left on the clock, sealing the win.

Coach Evan Palmer was happy with the win. “We were hurting a little bit after the Hickman tournament. Catholic hung in there, played tough defense. kept the score down and gave themselves a chance to win. I credit them. We have no excuses, they came ready to play and made it tough on us. We found a way all year, on days that we don’t have it and the other team has taken us out of our game, we have found a way to win. We will take it against Catholic any day.”

006-2Nixa, MO- Rockhurst University in Kansas City has gained another power soccer player from the Ozarks, Nixa’s Austin Engleman. Austin will join the Rockhurst Hawks, who earned their third Great Lakes Valley Championship in 2012.

Austin explained why he chose Rockhurst. “I think Rockhurst has a great soccer program and a good coach with a long history. When I went up there for try-outs, it just felt right.”

Nixa Coach Evan Palmer spoke proudly of Austin,” He is a great guy that we will definitely miss. He played every position in his four years, goal keeper too. Austin is just one of those guys who is very unselfish and will do what the team needs. This year, he was one of our leading scorers. Our defense was a little too porous, so I put him in the back and that solidified our defense, allowing us to shut out Catholic twice. He took some of his individual stats away doing that. He could have scored more goals than he did. I appreciated that. ”

Congratulations Austin!
